Due to the valuable nature of our collection, visitors to the G&LH Room must be 18 years of age or older. Individuals below that age must be accompanied by an adult or visit when the Research Assistant is on duty.
Handle with Care!
Many of our resources are "one of a kind" and fragile, so we ask patrons to please handle them with care! Please do not make notations in any books or on any documents, and do not add or remove any documents from their protective sleeves without consulting the Research Assistant. We also ask that patrons refrain from eating, while doing research, and be sure that beverage containers are tightly covered. Please bring any issues with our resources to the attention of the Research Assistant.
Keys to the Room
The key to the G&LH Room is available at the library's Circulation Desk, in the absence of the Research Assistant. One key opens the door to the main room and the other opens the microfilm storage closet. Please enter and exit through the door that is closest to the elevator. The lights and computers may remain on, but keys should be returned to the Circulation Desk.
Public restrooms are located to the right of the elevator, around the corner from the genealogy room. The keys to the restrooms are located in the drawer to the left, as you enter the genealogy room. Please bring any issues with the restrooms to the attention of the library staff.
Researchers are asked to sign the G&LH Room guest book, each time they visit, and to provide a description of their research. This information helps the library to maintain its statistics and know what resources are of interest to patrons.
Patrons who require personal assistance are welcome to call the library, in advance, to schedule an appointment. Research requests may also be made via telephone, mail, email or fax. Please allow 6-8 weeks for requests to be processed. Walk-ins are always welcome! In the absence of the Research Assistant, please feel free to leave a written message.
Beardsley Library serves the towns of Winchester, Barkhamsted, and Colebrook. Patrons from other towns or states are not required to be members of the library to view our resources. To borrow materials, however, they are required to have a current library card from their own town library and to be entered into Beardsley Library's database. Out-of-state borrowers are required to pay an annual fee.
Photographs & Photocopies
A photocopier is located near the library's Circulation Desk. Copies are 25-cents per side. Researchers may take photographs and make photocopies of resources in the G&LH Room. Many documents are stored in protective sleeves and may be copied without removing them from the sleeves. Kindly return any document removed for copying to its original place.
Patrons are asked to leave any resources that they look at on the table for library staff to re-shelve. This enables the library to know what resources are of interest to patrons and to keep our collection in proper numerical order.
Circulating Resources & Inter-Library Loans
Many genealogy and local history resources now circulate and are available as inter-library loans. Those that do not circulate are marked with a "reference" sticker. Inter-library loans are considered on an individual basis, as are the loan of reference items. Please speak to the Research Assistant about special requests. Items that are fragile, irreplaceable, or part of a series do not circulate and are not available as inter-library loans. We will gladly make copies and mail them, upon request.
Microfilm Reader & Computer
Directions on how to operate the microfilm reader and patron computer are next to the machines. Please ask a staff-person, if you need assistance operating this equipment. We ask patrons not to change the default settings on the microfilm machine and not to save personal files to the patron computers. Please be sure to sign out of your email as well.
Wireless connection is available in the G&LH Room, and electrical outlets are available in the smaller of the two rooms (indicated by a round, green sticker on the shelves). Select "Beardsley Guest" to connect to WiFi.
Forms & Brochures
There are "help" forms and brochures in the G&LHR and a "Guide to Our Collections" binder next to the guest book. There are also templates of family trees and census forms in the binder. Please feel free to make copies of anything in the binder.
Genealogy and local history research is conducted free of charge, but donations are welcome, as they enable us to expand and maintain our collection. To make a donation, see ABOUT: Donations on the library's home page.
We welcome your visit!
