Headstone Inscriptions

The Charles R. Hale Collection is a listing of many headstone inscriptions that existed in the state of CT between the years 1932 to 1934. The records for Winsted and Winchester are in the G&LH Room notebook collection and are titled "Headstone Inscriptions." The information contained in these inscriptions is exactly what appears on the headstones.
The Hale inscriptions are indexed according to surname, and an index of names appears at the end of the listing. Most of the inscriptions include birth and death dates, military service, and often spouses. The inscriptions are further organized according to cemeteries and sections. A listing of cemeteries and a map are also included with the inscriptions.
Winsted and Winchester's headstone inscriptions have been digitized (see the link below), and they are word searchable.
Please contact the Winchester City Hall for certified copies of death certificates and other vital records and for information regarding individuals who were buried after 1932 (the year the 2-year Hale project began).
You may also search the library's newspapers on microfilm for death announcements and obituaries. The CT State Library has the complete Charles R. Hale Collection in its archives, and the Genealogy & Local History Room has copies of headstone inscriptions for several surrounding towns.
